If you do not use Windows Aero theme, the following services can be disabled:

If you do not use any themes in Windows Vista, the following services can be disabled:

While everyone on the internet has their own version of how to eek out more performance from Windows Vista and Windows 7, these are basic steps to get you running smoothly.

 

Note: You should only disable the Windows Firewall if you already have a third party firewall in place, such as a Cable / DSL Router that does Statefull Packet Inspection (SPI). Nearly all cable / dsl routers do this which where sold after 2004. Check your products documentation for more information.
